For people who've been gaming a long time since the first PCs.

I had this same problem with Sins of a Solar Empire.  There is no setting for 1280x720.  Now as far as I know the most common HD resolution for 720p/60 is 1280x720 so I dont understand why its missing?  Im using a SHARP 46 Inch HD TV for my monitor and have it plugged into my ATI 3870 card through the HDMI interface which my tv only goes up to 720p with 60Hz.  If its anything but that, my display jumps to 1080i and 30Hz.  I dont want 1080i.. I want 720p.  And the closest thing you have to it is 1280x768 which doesnt work.  So why the omition of the most common 720p HD TV resolution?  Or how can I force it to use this?  Is there an INI file somewhere Im not looking in Vista I guess it could be somewhere in User settings.  Ill check

Rethla
yes this is stupid. How hard can it be for a modern game to support modern resolutions?
Since the 800x600 resolution got extincted for many years 1024*768 could be expected as minimum available resolution. A resolution of 720 pixel in height is still very uncommon for PC gamers. To verify this just take a look at the Steam hardware survey of may 2012. The following list shows all resolutions that have more than 1% share of the user base and at least 768 pixel in height.

  • 1980 x 1080   25.15%
  • 1366 x 768     17.11%
  • 1280 x 1024   10.78%
  • 1680 x 1050   10.25%
  • 1440 x 900       7.58%
  • 1600 x 900       6.77%
  • 1024 x 768       5.51%
  • 1280 x 800       4.23%
  • 1920 x 1200     3.64%
  • 1360 x 768       2.37%

These resolutions sums up to 93,39%. Compared to these here is the same list for 720 pixel:

  • 1280 x 720       1.51%

And even this resolution had a growth of 0.63 % since the last survey and therefore would be below 1% some time ago. Even the sum of all users with a resolution below 786 (there are some more with little percent values) will be 2% at maximum. In addition steam users are not high end users but reflect quite good what users have at home.

So supporting 720p was (is) for PC game developers a goody but nothing relevant. This might change if more users will use 720p TV screens but when Demigod was released in 2009 nobody cared about 720p for PC gamers.
